Lice Prevention In The Summer Months Isn’t Difficult!
The days are getting longer, the sun is shining brighter, and the air is getting warmer.
Summer is here, kids! Go out in the garden, play with your friends, share helmets as each takes a turn on the baseball pitch.
Braid each other’s hair; roll in the mud and sprinkling water. It’s a wonderful time to be alive!
For some people, the start of summer means the beginning to a brand new adventure every day.
However for parents, summer brings as much joy as sleepless nights—battling the evils of head lice. In retrospect, the long summer months are also the best time for parents to undertake strict lice preventative measures.
Summer Fun Brings a Boatload of Trouble for Parents
It doesn’t matter if your child is a toddler or a kid at school. Children will play with other kids. You can prevent the spread of lice by:- Discouraging sharing of combs, towels and other items that touch the head
- Discouraging activities that lead to head-to-head contact
- Keeping long hair tied back tightly in a braid, ponytail or bun
- Applying hairspray, mousse, or gel in hair
- Conducting weekly head checks in the hotspots (especially after summer camp and sleepovers)
- Lice find it easier to attach to clean hair shafts. Don’t wash hair every day
- Prior to sitting on a plane, use a lint roller on the seat. Do the same when sitting down at a movie theatre and stadium seat
- Keep all jackets, hats, backpacks, etc stored in separate cubbies
- Recognize signs of head lice before they turn into a full-blown infestation. These are itching at scalp, sores on neck (or scalp), and small red bumps
